Avre Koddel / White Navy Beans Curry

Koddel is a Coconut based curry as is called in Konkani language. It is spicy and is seasoned with asafoetida or with garlic depending on one’s choice. It is made with pulses like navy beans, horse gram, adzuki beans, kidney beans, black eyed peas, pink beans, etc. Additional to the pulses one of the vegetables like Ashgourd, raw Papaya, Potatoes or Mangalore Pumpkin is added.

Avre Koddel / White Navy Beans Curry is a spicy Mangalorean coconut based curry using White Navy Beans (known as Avro in Konkani). The addition of Potatoes and Jackfruit seeds along with garlic seasoning to the gravy base curry makes it even more flavourful.

Traditionally it is served in every Mangalorean’s house with a steamed rice and some vegetable stir fry but it is also goes great with roti, chapatis, phulkas.

INGREDIENTS :

(1) 1 cup of White Navy Beans / Avro
(2) 10 Jackfruit seeds
(3) 1 Drumstick, chopped into 2 inch length pieces
(4) 1 large Potato, chopped into bite sized cubes
(5) 8-10 garlic buds
(6) 1 cup fresh of frozen grated Coconut
(7) 6-8 byadgi red chillies
(8) 1 small marble sized Tamarind or 1/2 teaspoon of Tamarind paste
(9) Cooking oil preferably Coconut oil for tempering
(10) Salt to taste

Cuisine : Konkani, South Indian
Serves : 3-4 persons
Time : 40 minutes

METHOD :

(1) Soak the Navy Beans for 8-10 hours / overnight.

(2) Peel the skin of the Jackfruit seeds.

(3) After 8-10 hours of soaking,  pressure cook the soaked Navy beans and the peeled Jackfruit seeds with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and water till soft. I cooked until 2 whistles.

(4) Peel the large Potato and cut it into bite sized cubes. Cook in a utensil with little amount of salt and water till they are cooked but not lose its shape.

(5) Meanwhile, prepare the Coconut masala. In a blending jar, take the grated coconut, tamarind piece, roasted byadgi red chillies. Blend into a fine paste.

(6) Now take a kadhai / wok.

(7) Put the pressure cooked navy beans, jack fruit seeds along with cooked Potatoes in the kadhai. Also add chopped Drumsticks.

(8) Add Turmeric powder and Salt (As per taste required. Add little as we have already cooked previously in salted water).

(9) Add the coconut masala and required amount of water to make a medium thick gravy (Or according to how thick or thin you prefer).

(10) Bring to a boil on a low flame and simmer for about 5 minutes.

(11) In the meantime, prepare the seasoning.

(12) In a tempering ladle, heat 4 tablespoon of coconut oil. To the warm oil, add chopped garlic and sauté till they turn golden brown in colour.

(13) Add this to the Coconut based koddel. We call it as Avre Koddel.

(14) Now the Avre Koddel / White Navy Beans Curry is ready.

(15) Transfer it to the serving bowl.

(16) Serve hot with Steamed Rice and Vegetable Stir fry.
