Avre Humman / White Navy Beans Curry

White Navy Beans (Called Avro in Konkani language) is used to make a variety of dishes by the Mangaloreans in the Konkan region of Karnataka. My mother taught me how to make this dish called Avre Humman. I liked it so much with dosa. One can eat it along with steamed rice or with chapatis.
If you love to explore and taste dishes from different parts of the country, then this Konkani dish will surely steal your heart away.

Lets get to know the ingredients used here.

INGREDIENTS :

(1) 200 gms / 1 cup of White Navy Beans / Avro , soaked overnight
(2) 10 Jackfruit seeds, peeled
(3) 1 cup fresh of frozen grated Coconut
(4) 6-8 byadgi red chillies
(5) 1 small marble sized Tamarind or 1/2 teaspoon of Tamarind paste
(6) Cooking oil preferably Coconut oil for tempering
(7) 1/4 teaspoon of Asafoetida / Hing powder
(8) Salt to taste

Cuisine : Konkani, South Indian
Serves : 3-4 persons
Time : 40 minutes

METHOD :

(1) Soak the Navy Beans for 8-10 hours / overnight.

(2) Peel the skin of the Jackfruit seeds.

(3) After 8-10 hours of soaking,  pressure cook the soaked Navy beans and the peeled Jackfruit seeds with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and water till soft. I cooked until 2 whistles. Allow the pressure of the cooker to release on its own and keep aside.

(4) Meanwhile, prepare the Coconut masala. In a blending jar, take the grated coconut, tamarind piece, roasted byadgi red chillies. Blend into a fine paste.

(5) Now take a kadhai / wok.

(6) Put the pressure cooked navy beans and jack fruit seeds.

(7) Add Turmeric powder, Asafoetida and Salt (As per taste required. Add little as we have already cooked previously in salted water).

(8) Add the coconut paste to the cooked White Navy beans and jackfruit seeds.

(9) Add water according to the consistency you require. You can use the water that remained from boiling the White Navy Beans in pressure cooker also.

(10) Add 2 tablespoon of Coconut oil to the gravy and bring to a boil. Then simmer for 5 minutes.

(11) Once simmered, turn off the gas flame. Avre Humman is ready.

(12) Transfer it to the serving bowl.

(13) Serve hot with Steamed Rice and Vegetable Stir fry.
